Turf Top Dressing

Smoothing uneven turf and improving the surface where the grass calls for it.

Intended for

Turf that would benefit from a surface amendment — uneven grade, thinning areas, or lawns that could use a richer top layer to build from.

What it is — and isn't

Top dressing adds a thin amendment to the turf surface to smooth uneven areas and improve the surface and soil the grass grows from. It's a different step from core aeration, which relieves compaction below the surface. We assess whether the turf actually needs it before recommending it.

How it works

Assess, then amend

We look at the turf first — its density, its surface, and where it's struggling. If top dressing fits the conditions, we apply it as a focused amendment to smooth and improve the surface; if the turf needs something else, we say so.

It's one tool among several. Where compaction is the issue, core aeration may be the better next step, and the two can be coordinated when appropriate. Where the lawn is otherwise healthy, it may not be needed at all.

Top dressing questions

Is top dressing the same as aeration?
No. Top dressing amends the turf surface; core aeration relieves compaction below it. They're related but address different conditions.
Does every lawn need top dressing?
No. We assess the turf first and recommend top dressing only where it would help.
What does top dressing actually do?
It adds a thin amendment to the turf surface to smooth uneven areas and improve the surface and soil the grass grows from.
How do I know if my lawn needs it?
Request a consultation. We'll assess the turf and tell you whether top dressing, aeration, or ordinary lawn care is the right next step.
